A comprehensive approach to well being: GCHA at 60
Integrating health and well-being into housing management is essential for improving residents' quality of life and fostering resilient communities. GCHA is dedicated to creating housing solutions that support both physical and mental health.
Health programmes:
We participates in the Better Housing, Better Health programme, which aims to enhance residents’ health outcomes by addressing housing-related health issues. This programme, although not initiated by GCHA, is supported and promoted by the association to benefit our residents. It provides a range of services, including:
- Energy Efficiency Advice: Guidance on how to make homes more energy-efficient, which can reduce utility bills and create a warmer living environment, thus preventing health problems related to cold and dampness.
- Financial Support for Heating Improvements: Assistance in securing funding or grants to improve heating systems within homes. This is crucial for residents who might otherwise struggle to afford necessary upgrades.
- Home Suitability Adjustments: Helping residents modify their homes to better suit their health needs, such as installing handrails for those with mobility issues or providing resources to improve indoor air quality.
These efforts are aimed at mitigating health risks like respiratory issues, which are often exacerbated by inadequate heating and poor living conditions.
Mental Health Support:
Mental health is a vital aspect of overall well-being. GCHA supports residents through our Tenant Support and Wellbeing Service (TSWS). This service includes:
- Access to Mental Health Services: Providing connections to professional mental health services for residents in need of more specialised care.
- Counselling and Support: Offering counselling services to help residents cope with various stressors, including those related to housing instability, financial difficulties, or personal issues.
- Workshops and Group Sessions: Organising workshops and support groups that focus on mental health awareness, stress management, and community building
These initiatives are designed to address common issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression, which can be exacerbated by housing challenges.
Healthy Living Environments:
Creating healthy living environments is another critical focus. Our efforts in this area include:
- Managing Damp and Mould: Providing residents with the knowledge and tools to prevent and manage damp and mould in their homes. This includes advice on ventilation, heating, and moisture control. Damp and mould not only damage property but also pose significant health risks, such as respiratory problems and allergies.
- Fire Safety: Regularly updating fire safety protocols and educating residents on best practices for maintaining fire safety. GCHA provides fire safety equipment, such as smoke detectors, and conducts regular inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards. This proactive approach helps prevent fire-related incidents and ensures that residents can live in a secure environment.
Addressing health in housing management is crucial for improving the overall well-being of residents. We emphasise the importance of integrating health and well-being into housing strategies and reflect our commitment to enhancing the quality of housing and supporting the health of our residents.
By focusing on both physical and mental health, we ensure that our residents have the support they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.
